Product Carbon Footprint (PCF)

Your EU buyers are asking for product carbon footprint data. We calculate it to the standard they require.

Product carbon footprint measurement — the quantification of greenhouse gas emissions across a product's full lifecycle in accordance with ISO 14067 — is moving from a sustainability differentiator to a market access requirement. Enterprise buyers in construction, automotive, retail, and manufacturing are requiring verified PCF data as a condition of procurement, specification, and supply chain qualification. The EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) will extend mandatory product-level carbon requirements to additional sectors from 2026. For manufacturers supplying EU markets, the question is no longer whether to measure product carbon footprints — it is whether to do so accurately enough to satisfy the requirements of the customers who are asking.

Semtrio has delivered over 1,000 ISO 14067-compliant product carbon footprint calculations across construction materials, textiles, chemicals, aluminium, packaging, and glass sectors — and as a PCR developer on the International EPD System, we operate at the level where the methodology rules themselves are defined.

Calculate your product carbon footprint

EU procurement requirements are making PCF mandatory in practice:

While PCF measurement under ISO 14067 is formally voluntary in most contexts, enterprise buyers in EU supply chains are increasingly making verified product-level carbon data a condition of qualification. For manufacturers supplying automotive, construction, retail, and industrial goods markets, the absence of a verified PCF is becoming a commercial disqualifier — regardless of whether a formal regulation yet requires it.

ESPR will formalize requirements for additional sectors from 2026:

The EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation introduces mandatory product environmental performance requirements — including carbon footprint — across an expanding list of product categories. The battery sector is already subject to mandatory lifecycle carbon intensity thresholds. Construction materials, textiles, electronics, chemicals, and other categories are entering scope through ESPR's delegated act schedule. Manufacturers that have not built PCF measurement capability will face market access barriers as their product categories enter scope.

Inaccurate PCF data creates commercial and reputational risk:

Buyers who request PCF data are increasingly applying scrutiny to methodology, system boundary definition, and verification status. A PCF calculation based on incorrect boundaries, generic emission factors, or undocumented methodology will not satisfy qualified buyers and may be flagged during supply chain audits. The risk of a rejected or challenged PCF calculation is not just the loss of a specific order — it is the loss of qualified supplier status that may take months to restore.

Product carbon footprint calculations are technically demanding in ways that corporate GHG inventories are not. ISO 14067 requires precise system boundary definition at the product level — determining what is included and excluded from the lifecycle boundary, how to treat multifunctional processes and co-products, and how to select allocation methods for shared production systems. The choice of system boundary (cradle-to-gate, cradle-to-grave, or cradle-to-cradle) must be justified by the intended use of the PCF — a cradle-to-gate calculation may satisfy an EU buyer's procurement form but fail a product-level disclosure requirement that demands full lifecycle coverage.

Semtrio's PCF delivery is built around the intended end use of each calculation. We define the system boundary appropriate to the buyer requirement, collect and quality-review primary production data from the manufacturing process, apply ISO 14067-aligned methodology with traceable, sector-appropriate emission factors, and produce calculation documentation that supports both buyer qualification and regulatory compliance. Our outputs are produced without requiring clients to invest in LCA software or build internal LCA expertise — Semtrio manages the full technical process from data collection to final PCF report.

OUR PROCESS

What We Deliver

An ISO 14067-compliant product carbon footprint — from system boundary to verified, buyer-ready output.

System Boundary Definition & Goal and Scope

We define the goal and scope of the PCF in accordance with ISO 14067 and any applicable Product Category Rules — including the system boundary (cradle-to-gate, cradle-to-grave, or gate-to-gate), the reference unit (functional unit or declared unit), the intended audience, and the intended use. We confirm the boundary is appropriate for the specific buyer requirement or regulatory context the PCF must satisfy. Output: a documented goal and scope statement aligned with ISO 14067 and the specific use case.

Data Collection & Life Cycle Inventory

We design and execute the data collection process for all life cycle stages within the defined system boundary — primary production data, energy and fuel inputs, raw material procurement, transportation, packaging, and where relevant, use and end-of-life phases. We apply quality review to all data inputs and select traceable, sector-appropriate emission factors aligned with recognized databases. Output: a complete, quality-reviewed life cycle inventory ready for calculation.

PCF Calculation & Allocation

We calculate the product carbon footprint in tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per functional or declared unit, apply ISO 14067-compliant allocation methods for co-products and multifunctional processes, and document all calculation choices with justification. We identify emission hotspots across the lifecycle — the stages and inputs contributing most to the product's carbon intensity. Output: a complete PCF calculation with hotspot analysis and full methodology documentation.

PCF Report & Buyer-Ready Output

We produce the final ISO 14067-aligned PCF report — including goal and scope statement, life cycle inventory, calculation results, hotspot analysis, and methodology documentation — in the format required for buyer qualification, regulatory submission, or EPD development. Output: a verified, buyer-ready PCF report and, where required, supporting data files for EPD program operator submission.

CBAM Accounting & Reporting

For manufacturers in CBAM-covered sectors, the same production-level emissions data that supports a PCF calculation is the foundation of CBAM embedded carbon reporting — structuring both from the same data collection process eliminates duplication and improves accuracy across both outputs.

EcoVadis Advisory

EU buyers requiring verified PCF data frequently also require EcoVadis scores from their suppliers — managing both as a coordinated engagement reduces internal data burden and strengthens supplier qualification across all dimensions buyers are assessing simultaneously.

Sustainability Reporting (GRI)

Product-level carbon intensity data produced through PCF calculations directly supports GRI 305 (Emissions) product-level disclosures — for manufacturers producing GRI-aligned sustainability reports, PCF data strengthens the emissions disclosure with verified product-level evidence.

Supplier Engagement & Enablement

PCF calculations for complex manufactured products require upstream material and component carbon data from suppliers — organizations that have not yet established supplier data collection processes face significant data gaps. Semtrio's supplier engagement programs build the data collection infrastructure PCF accuracy depends on.

Why Semtrio

We are a PCR developer on the International EPD System — and we have delivered over 1,000 product carbon footprints across sectors.

Product Category Rules (PCRs) are the documents that define exactly how PCF and EPD calculations must be conducted within a given product category — specifying the system boundary, allocation methods, emission factor requirements, and verification standards that every calculation in that category must follow. Semtrio is a PCR developer on the International EPD System — one of the world's leading EPD program operators — having authored the PCR for Denim fabrics and serving as moderator for several other product categories. This is not a practitioner credential. It means Semtrio writes the rules that others calculate by.

The practical implication for clients is methodological certainty. When Semtrio calculates a PCF for a product category where we hold or have developed the PCR, the methodology is not interpreted — it is authored. When we calculate a PCF in an adjacent category, we bring the depth of methodology authorship to the application of existing PCRs. That depth is what makes the difference between a PCF that passes buyer scrutiny and one that is challenged at the documentation stage.

Having delivered over 1,000 product carbon footprints across construction materials, textiles, chemicals, aluminium, packaging, and glass — Semtrio has the sector-specific emission factor knowledge, the boundary-setting experience, and the allocation methodology depth that complex manufactured products require. We manage the full delivery process: data collection architecture, lifecycle inventory, calculation, hotspot analysis, and final buyer-ready documentation — without requiring clients to invest in LCA software or build internal PCF expertise.
