ESG RATINGS
B Corp certification is the most rigorous third-party standard for overall social and environmental performance available to companies. Unlike ratings that assess a single dimension of sustainability performance, the B Corp Impact Assessment evaluates the full organizational system — governance, workers, community, environment, and customers — producing a single score that reflects how an organization's structure, policies, and practices perform across all five dimensions simultaneously. A B Corp certification is not a reporting exercise or a questionnaire submission. It is an assessment of organizational reality.
Semtrio is a certified B Corp with a score of 140.3 in 2025 — achieved through multiple certification cycles and reflecting the actual state of our governance, operations, and client delivery practices. We advise on B Corp certification from a position of direct experience: having been through the assessment, the recertification process, and the organizational development work that drives continuous score improvement. When we advise a client on what their board structure needs to demonstrate, what their worker wellbeing data must show, or what their environmental management documentation requires — we advise from evidence, not inference.
The B Impact Assessment evaluates governance, workers, community, environment, and customers across hundreds of questions — the score is aggregated across all five dimensions and must reach 80 or above for certification eligibility. A score of 80 represents approximately the 80th percentile of all companies that have completed the assessment. The average score of companies that complete the assessment but do not pursue certification is around 50. The certification threshold is genuinely demanding — organizations do not achieve it without systematic performance and governance development.
For most organizations, B Corp certification requires amending the articles of association or equivalent constitutional document to formally embed the consideration of all stakeholder interests — not just shareholder interests — in the governance framework. This is not a disclosure exercise; it is a structural legal change. Organizations that approach B Corp purely as a communications credential without understanding the governance commitment it requires consistently face delays and rework during the certification process.
B Corp certification is recognized by institutional investors, enterprise buyers, and sustainable finance providers as a signal of genuine organizational commitment to sustainability — distinct from sector-specific ratings or disclosure-based scores. It signals that the entire organizational system — from governance to supply chain to employee wellbeing — has been assessed against an independent standard and meets the threshold for certification. For purpose-driven organizations, it provides a publicly defensible, independently verified performance claim.
The most important thing to understand about B Corp advisory is that the certification cannot be gamed. The B Impact Assessment evaluates actual organizational policies, practices, and data — not aspirations, narratives, or planned improvements. An organization that does not have board oversight of ESG factors built into its governance documents cannot score highly on the governance section regardless of how it describes its practices. An organization that does not track worker wellbeing quantitatively cannot score highly on the workers section regardless of how much it values its people. The assessment reflects what actually exists.
This is what makes B Corp advisory categorically different from disclosure or questionnaire advisory. Semtrio's role in a B Corp engagement is not to help organizations represent themselves better — it is to help them understand where genuine organizational development is required, design the governance structures and management practices that the assessment reflects accurately, and build the data collection processes that enable the assessment to capture what already exists. The certification that results reflects an organization that actually meets the standard — not one that knows how to present itself to it.
OUR PROCESS
A structured B Corp certification program — from baseline assessment to certified score, through genuine organizational development.
B Corp certification requires genuine organizational integration of sustainability across governance, operations, and supply chain — organizations with strong sustainability strategies and operational integration consistently achieve higher BIA scores than those managing sustainability at the disclosure layer. Semtrio designs B Corp programs and sustainability strategies as connected engagements.
Learn moreThe B Impact Assessment's Environment section scores GHG management, energy use, and emissions reduction — verified, methodology-aligned GHG inventories with year-on-year improvement trends produce the quantitative evidence that drives Environment section scoring and is required for higher certification scores.
Learn moreGRI sustainability reporting builds the data architecture and KPI framework that the B Impact Assessment's quantitative questions draw from — organizations with established GRI reporting processes have significantly stronger BIA evidence bases, particularly for the Environment and Workers sections.
Learn moreB Corp's Sustainable Procurement criteria within the Environment section rewards organizations with documented supplier engagement programs and supplier sustainability requirements — Semtrio designs supplier engagement programs that simultaneously serve BIA certification and supply chain disclosure requirements.
Learn moreCertified B Corp — 140.3 in 2025. Multiple certification cycles. Advising on exactly what we have been assessed on.
Semtrio is a certified B Corp with a score of 140.3 in 2025 — achieved through multiple certification cycles that have included the full organizational development work, legal amendment, governance restructuring, data collection system design, and B Lab verification process that the certification requires. We have not studied B Corp from the outside. We have been through it — including the parts that are genuinely difficult: the governance amendments that require board engagement, the worker wellbeing data systems that require HR integration, the environmental management documentation that requires operational buy-in. That direct experience is what makes our B Corp advisory distinctive.
When we advise a client on what their governance documentation needs to demonstrate, we advise from the experience of having restructured our own. When we advise on what worker data the assessment requires, we advise from having built our own collection process. When we advise on what score is realistic for an organization at a given stage of development, we advise from having tracked our own score trajectory across multiple cycles. The B Impact Assessment cannot be advised well from a theoretical understanding of the methodology — it requires direct experience of what the methodology actually reflects in organizational practice.
A score of 140.3 also positions Semtrio to advise clients who want to achieve not just the certification threshold of 80, but a score that reflects genuine leadership — placing them in the upper percentiles of certified organizations globally.
