FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Corporate Carbon Footprint?

Corporate Carbon Footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions that are directly or indirectly caused by business activities, calculated as carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).

What is the Product Carbon Footprint?

Product carbon footprint is calculated by measuring greenhouse gas emissions throughout the life cycle of a product or service, from raw material extraction and production to its use, recycling, or end-of-life.

What is the Scope of the Carbon Footprint?

Carbon footprint emission sources are divided as direct and indirect emissions.

Scope 1: Direct greenhouse gas emissions are emissions coming from sources owned or controlled by the reporting organization.

Scope 2: Indirect greenhouse gas emissions are emissions an organization causes indirectly when the energy it purchases or uses is produced.

Scope 3: Other indirect greenhouse gas emissions are all emissions that do not fall into Scope 2. Scope 3 emissions are not produced by the company itself; they are emitted up and down its value chain. 34% of carbon footprint calculations are made within Scope 3, which is calculated voluntarily.

How Does Carbon Footprint Analysis & Reporting Benefit Us?

Carbon footprint studies can reveal success in environmental management when accompanied by emission reduction, which increases the reliability of your brand and strengthens communication with stakeholders.

At What Levels Can Carbon Footprint Be Calculated?

Carbon footprint calculations can be made both at the corporate level and product/service level.

Can Carbon Footprint Calculations Be Verified?

All of Semtrio’s carbon footprint calculations and reporting services are verified by independent verifiers.

What are the Carbon Footprint Calculation and Reporting Standards?

GHG Protocol, developed by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council on Sustainable Development (WBCSD), sets the global standard for measuring, managing and reporting greenhouse gas emissions. Hundreds of companies and organizations around the world use GHG Protocol standards and tools to manage their emissions and become more efficient and prosperous in the long term.

ISO 14064-1:2018 is the standard specifying the organizational-level principles and requirements for the quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and emission removals. It indicates the requirements conditions for the design, development, management, reporting and verification of an organization’s greenhouse gas inventory.

ISO 14064-2:2018 is the standard that provides project-level guidance and sets out the principles and requirements for quantification, monitoring and reporting of activities that lead to greenhouse gas emission reduction and removals.

In addition, it includes requirements for planning the GHG project, identifying GHG emission sources regarding the project and baseline scenarios, determining sink and reservoirs, monitoring, reviewing, documenting and reporting the performance of GHG projects, and managing the data quality.

ISO 14064-3:2018 sets out the principles and requirements for the validation and verification of greenhouse gas calculations.

What are Carbon Footprint Emission Sources?

Emission sources are divided into three as direct greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1), indirect greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 2), and indirect value chain greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 3).

How to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint?

We cannot know how to reduce our carbon footprint without calculating. Therefore, carbon footprint calculations should be made before planning the carbon footprint reduction processes. Following the analysis of emission sources and calculation, it will be possible to reduce our carbon footprint with planning and implementing alternative solutions.

Semtrio’s consultancy does not only include calculation and reporting; it offers a holistic approach with solutions to reduce your carbon footprint. In principle, we do not believe that a sustainability consultancy company that has not zeroed its own carbon footprint can offer effective solutions to its customers, so we have started to reduce our own carbon footprint.

Is Semtrio a Net Zero Company?

Semtrio is a ‘carbon neutral’ company; meaning we offset our unavoidable emissions elsewhere by contributing to voluntary emission reduction projects. Semtrio has become a carbon neutral company by offsetting more emissions than it causes. For more detailed information, you can take a look at our Carbon Offset service.
